Planning and the Environment
The National Planning Policy Framework says that one of the roles of the planning system in sustainable development is:
“an environmental role – contributing to protecting and enhancing our natural, built and historic environment; and, as part of this, helping to improve biodiversity, use natural resources prudently, minimise waste and pollution, and mitigate and adapt to climate change including moving to a low carbon economy”
How well does the planning process protect and enhance the environment?
Is the balance between economic, social and environmental interests properly struck?
Are its expectations for environmental information proportionate?
Does it have sufficient positive tools to remedy environmental harm?
