The first war of the gods tore the world apart. Each god continually remaking reality was more than the universe could withstand… The great nothingness returned, leaving the gods to bicker in the void. Eventually, a compromise was reached. The gods joined forces to create the universe anew, but this time there were rules that even they must obey. No longer could gods battle directly, tugging against one another on the fabric of reality. Now their wars are fought in the mortal world with mighty champions and devastating events.
We are very excited to announce that Heffers Games will be hosting a Qualifier for the $100,000 World Championship for White Wizard Games’ Epic Card Game, the strategy card game from the people who brought you Star Realms! In addition to our prizes on the night, we will offer the winner the opportunity to compete in the 2016 Epic Card Game World Championship held in Massachusetts during November.
This Qualifier tournament will run as a series of Swiss-style single round matches, after which the top players will progress into a high stakes knockout vying for a chance to be in the final.
If you have never played before, please still sign up. Check out the excellent videos from game designer Rob Doughety who will walk you through (https://youtu.be/jaaNJ_ANEqE) and explain all the rules (https://youtu.be/zgP7BNfuiFo) for this strategy card game that comes without the card rarity or huge expense of other similar games. We will also be offering tutorials and demonstrations during our games nights leading up to the tournament (full schedule here: www.facebook.com/heffersgifts).
Preliminary Rounds – “Random 45”
Players will be dealt 45 cards randomly selected from the set of 168 cards in the base set + Tyrants. Of those 45 cards, each player will build a 30 card deck, which they will use for all the preliminary rounds.
Each round, players will be paired with an opponent with the same number of wins. After several rounds of play, the eight players with the best record advance to the playoffs. (The number of preliminary rounds will be based on attendance.)
Playoff Rounds & Grand Final – “Pack Draft”
The remaining rounds are single elimination, based on the pack draft format. Each round will eliminate half the remaining players until the last two meet in the finals. For the pack draft, each of the 8 players will receive three 10-card “packs” of randomly selected cards, which they keep separate.
Each player looks through their first pack, picking one card and passing the remaining 9 to the player on their left. They then take the pack just passed to them and do the same, repeating until all players have drafted a card from the first pack. The second pack is drafted passing to the right, and the third to the left. At the end of this all players will have a 30-card deck, which they will use for all of the playoffs and the grand final.
Bring your own cards! Players will be expected to have their own copy of Epic and all cards from the Tyrants expansion. No promotional cards (except for official alternate arts) will be permitted for use at any stage in the tournament. There may be a limited number of spare cards to share, although sharing will only be permitted between players of a similar playing level. If there are not enough cards to go around, players will be asked to buy a full set (available on the night with 10% off) or withdraw.
- 1st place player will win their choice of an Epic Card Game "Sea Hydra" limited edition playmat or "Raging T-Rex" card storage box.
- 2nd place wins whichever remains of the playmat & card storage box.
- Top 8 will receive a promotional prize card "New Dawn".
- All players will receive a participation promotional prize card "Necromancer Apprentice".
- All players will receive 20% off Star Realms and Epic playmats stocked by Heffers on the night.
But most importantly, the winning player becomes qualified for the 2016 Epic World Championship, meaning they will win at least $500 at the Championship and have a chance to win $25,000 and become the first Epic World Champion! Only 64 people will qualify for this event and they will battle for a total of $100,000 in cash prizes. All costs, including travel & accommodation, are the responsibility of the player and are not reimbursed by Heffers, Blackwells, Boardgames at the Bookshop or White Wizard Games.
