Description

Dr Andi Mabhala is a reader of Public Health Epidemiology in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Chester. Andi’s research interest centres on the socio-economic determinants of inequalities in health and social justice. His recent research work examined the wellbeing of marginalised population groups and under researched topics including; homelessness, new psychoactive substance users, students’ determinants of health and food banks.

Andi’s introduction to his seminar

“You will have a hard time finding individuals who dare to dispute that health inequalities are unfair, unjust and avoidable. This affirmation is based on the burgeoning epidemiological evidence which forms a foundation for our understanding of public health as a strategy to reduce health inequalities. Even those individuals and social institutions that create and sustain these inequalities do not contest the evidence of the association between premature mortality and inequalities in primary social determinants. This raises a question: if the evidence of association between inequalities in health and premature death is incontestable, why are we not eradicating them?

This observation has led me to propose that epidemiology is a science discipline driven by moral and ethical concerns about the injustice of health inequalities.

The seminar will draw on the work of the past and present epidemiological proponents to explore this dichotomy between the values and scientific practices of epidemiological research. It then proposes that if one assumes that the ill health of individuals is an important moral concern, it stands to reason that following through on that concern is what drives the pursuit of scientific knowledge of the causes, distribution patterns, and consequences of ill health”.
