About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Epsom Council built this municipal air raid shelter to protect the citizens of the sleepy suburbs from Luftwaffe attack during the Second World War. Constructed 50 feet underground, the grid of brick and metal lined tunnels provided shelter to 1,500 people. It was completed in 1942, ironically not in time for the main bomber blitz at the start of the war, but provided cover to those seeking to escape the fall of V1 doodlebug flying bombs and V2 rockets at the end of the war. Now long forgotten and hidden in woodland on the edge of Epsom, this is a secret, unique and fascinating reminder of the dark days of Hitler's Blitz on Britain.

As well as exploring the story of this bunker, our tour will tell the history of the Blitz and look at the various ways Britons sheltered from the bombs. Includes wartime films projected on the walls to illustrate the story. Duration: approx 2 hours.

Meet at the woodland car park on the west side of Ashley Road (B290), entrance gates to which are by a bus stop sign post (opposite No.65 Ashley Road). Post Code KT18 5BN or precise location via the very highly recommended What3Words geolocation app using the three words "scary.status.each". Please wear sturdy shoes - no high heels, flip flops etc. Bring an individual torch. No toilet facilities on site. As well as this 1.30pm tour, there is also an 11am tour listed separately on Eventbrite - click here for further details. Access Statement: This event is moderately accessible. Considerations for wheelchair users are: a short path from the woodland car park to the entrance which leads down a long shallow ramp that can get muddy in wet weather. Also, at the entrance are three steps down - a ramp is available. Wheelchair width measurements are required in advance as some chairs may be too wide for the entrance. Inside, the going is largely flat, packed earth or concrete, underfoot. Total distance approx 500m. If you require wheelchair access please contact us at hiddenhistorytours.uk@gmail.com before booking.
