Event description

Description

Promoting equality and diversity in education is essential for both teachers and students. The aim is to create a classroom and school environment where all students can thrive together and understand that individual characteristics make people unique and not ‘different’ in a negative way.

Following the enormous success of individual schools' and teachers' efforts to bring Equality to the fore in their spheres, we are running this networking and workshop event to get together experienced equality champions and school staff who are keen to hit the ground running with their own initiatives.

You will get the opportunity to take part in:

  • 'Unconscious bias: it's okay, we all have it!' - session lead by Equaliteach
  • Student-led session: 'Deaf but not isolated' - particularly useful for staff working with deaf students in schools where there is not a dedicated learning support unit for deaf students.
  • 'Working hard or Working group?' - experienced equality champions lead this session on establishing your own working group within a school, to ensure that work is impactful and you don't overload yourself!
  • 'It's okay not to be okay' - a reflection on the toxicity of a 'man up' culture and how schools can overcome it, led by student mental health ambassadors and Meg Greet

as well as meet fellow teachers wanting to embed equality into their own teaching and learning and wider school development plans, all over coffee and cake (or equally, tea!)

The event is suitable for anyone who works in schools or with young people. Please come along and share your ideas, learn from others and network with loads of great people.

This event is supported by a grant from the Improving Gender Balance team at the IOP.
