Event description
Two 90-min workshops to support organisations to be more confident and well-equipped to talk about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

About this Event

In its role of supporting Sandwell's Voluntary and Community Sector to grow and develop, SCVO is very pleased to be able to offer two workshops to support organisations to be more confident and well-equipped to talk to communities about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

We know that one of the key strengths of Sandwell is the diversity of its communities and so a key aspect of this delivery is to support groups about how the thinking around Equality, Diversity and Inclusion can be embedded in everyday practice.

Two 90 minute online sessions are being offered on the topic of inclusive practice, which encompasses a conversation about unconscious and conscious biases.

The training offered aims to:

  • increase confidence in the areas of equality, diversity and inclusion;
  • consider what is done well now and what could be done better;
  • create a safe space to talk about equality and inclusion together;
  • explore inclusive language and what it means;
  • have an opportunity to discuss and understand allyship, microaggressions and biases;
  • explore how to broaden the recruitment of more diverse volunteers, trustees and staff.

The content for each workshop is as follows:

Session 1 (90 mins): Tuesday, 2nd March 2021: 10.00-11.30am

  • Welcome and create safe space online.
  • What is inclusive practice and what it means in the community and voluntary sector.
  • Defining our personal culture and why that’s important and how it forms a part of our role in out organisation.
  • What feels uncomfortable in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion and what feels comfortable.
  • Inclusive language and how it relates to practice.
  • How could organisations reach out and reflect client bases more effectively

Session 2 (90 mins): Thursday, 4th March 2021: 10.00-11.30am

  • Welcome and create safe space online.
  • Discovering and uncovering biases (both conscious and unconscious) and how we all have them.
  • Understanding microaggressions and their impact.
  • Being a genuine race equality ally and ally to people and groups who are different to us.
  • Broadening the pool for volunteers, trustees and staff: tangible ways forward.
  • How you are going to take action- committing to actions as a group and specific actions as individuals.

These sessions will be interactive and will not simply be slides and talking by the facilitator.

**PLEASE NOTE** - each session is 'stand-alone' but you will gain the most benefit by being able to participate in both.
