What is Equality In Focus?

Equality In Focus is a framework that aims to help production and crew to understand and overcome inequality and injustice, contributing to creating a fairer and more representative film & television industry for all, through action not words.

What will happen in this workshop?

In this workshop you will look in-depth at implicit bias, learn more about racism, microagressions and other related topics, understand the relationship between mental health and inequality, and be guided through solutions that are specific to the film and television industry. The session will include case studies, smaller group discussions and tutorials.

We strongly recommend that you start the Equality In Focus training framework BEFORE this live session, to get an initial understanding of the issues at hand and particularly the facts about unconcious bias.

About the trainers

Dom Jackson-Cole has over 17 years of experience as a trainer and facilitator across a variety of sectors, with expertise in the fields of Widening Participation and Equality and Diversity. He has worked with the BFI, BAFTA, and The Film & TV Charity to deliver training on racialised and gendered biases.

Joining Dom will be Joris Lechêne, an artist, social influencer and YouTube content creator, who has always stood at the meeting points of various worlds. A child of an interracial couple, raised in Guadeloupe, French Caribbean and mainland France, he has since lived and worked in Portugal, South Africa and the UK. The combination of these various locations and his identity at the intersections of 'race', neurodiversity, class and sexuality allowed him to experience the world simultaneously as an outsider and an insider, both privileged and marginalised in any given situation. Joris's experiences put him at a vantage point to observe, analyse and speak up on the topics of systemic inequalities, discrimination and biases.

Kate Rolfe heads up the Foundation department at Digital Orchard and will lead on the action plan guidance of this workshop, and the training follow-up.

Matt Longley is an accredited i-act instructor and trains HOD's and crew to Manage and Promote Positive Mental health and Wellbeing. Matt worked in equipment hire for many years supplying both film productions and music events across UK. He has worked on some of the largest film productions including Harry Potter, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises and War Horse.
