ABOUT INSIDE THE IVORY TOWER...
This research places the perspectives, experiences and career trajectories of women of colour in British academia at the centre of analysis. It positions academia as a space dominated by whiteness and patriarchy where women of colour must develop strategies for survival and success amid raced and gendered discrimination. The authors draw on Black feminist theory to examine how race and gender shapes the experiences of women of colour in British academia and how racism manifests in day to day experiences within faculties and departments, from subtle microagressions to overt racialised and gendered abuse. It touches on common themes such as invisibility, hypervisibility, exclusion and belonging, highlighting intersectional experiences.

SPEAKERS
Richard is Chair of the University Board, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA).
Deborah is a Senior Academic at BU in the Faculty of Media & Communication, Co-Chair of BU’s Race Equality Steering Group and Founder & Director of Black British Academics.
Gillian is Co-founder and Publisher of Trentham Books, co-founded along with Professor John Eggleston in 1985. She worked to further race and gender equality as an ILEA librarian and research fellow and later as an academic.
James is the Equality and Diversity Adviser at BU.
Josephine is a former Course Director of the undergraduate social work degree at Coventry University and a Patron of Black British Academics.
Jenny is a Senior Lecturer in Health Promotion in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies at the Open University.
Ima is a Senior Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland and an experienced clinician, researcher and project manager.
Elizabeth is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Applied and Human Sciences at Kingston University, London.
Aisha is an academic and creative practitioner at University of the Arts London and Director of Shades of Noir, a programme centred on race in creative arts education and industry.
Marcia is Associate Dean and Head of the School of Health, Sport & Bioscience at the University of East London.
Daniel is a Reader and Deputy Head of School (Research and Enterprise) in the School of Sport and Service Management at Brighton University
Shirley is a distinguished composer, visionary artist and cultural activist who has composed extensively for television, film, theatre, dance and opera, and Reader in Music at he University of Westminster. She is also a Patron of Black British Academics.
