Event description

Description

Is the future of Erith Market in your hands? Join us for a discussion that looks at the role of Erith Market in the town centre in order to think about its future. We’ll be joined by historian Sandra Shevey who has been writing in support of London street markets since 1990, The Exchange who will be feeding back from Saturday’s event and Kay Richardson from Well Street Market, London’s most innovative street market, to explore community-led models for Erith.

The Exchange

The Exchange is an arts organisation based in Erith and working with Bexley Council to deliver a bright new future for the Carnegie Building as a cultural hub for the town. The Lighthouse project provides the exchange with its first significant opportunity to engage with the public and begin the conversation around the development of the old library.

Sandra Shevey

Sandra Shevey has been promoting conservation of London/countryside local, traditional street markets since 1990 when she began her tours company. Her daily tours include 3 markets in 3 hrs and run at 11am and 6pm (the night walk). Sandra also blogs about street markets worldwide at www.martkettowns.wordpress.com. A trailer for Sandra`s London street markets documentary is visible here. The full 30 min documentary is obtainable at the same email where you can book for a tour - sandra_shevey@yahoo.com.

Kay Richardson

Kay Richardson is the Project Manager of Well Street Market. She is a local resident who was inspired to change her career after enjoying organising Well Street's Winter Festival in 2015, which was a great success and piloted ideas based on surveys with the local community. The local residents and traders association had always wanted to bring back the historic market and Kay felt that crowdfunding offered the perfect solution. She was the project creator and pitched to the Mayor of London at City Hall and secured the highest bid given by Sadiq Khan. Now known as London's most innovative market, Well Street relaunched in December 2016, opened by The Mayor of London, Wayne Hemingway MBE and Norman Jay MBE. Well Street Market went weekly in July 2017 and is home to London's first student makers market and teenage market, offering free stalls to local entrepreneurs as well as having a live stage which has seen established acts play alongside young up and coming talent.
