ERO Neighbourhood Cinema: Sweetgrass
Tue 21 March 2017, 10:30 – 12:30 GMT
The ERO’s Neighbourhood Cinema showing in March is a ‘beautiful and hypnotic’ documentary called ‘Sweetgrass’. The tag line for the film is “the last ride of the American cowboy” but, in fact, it follows a group of ranchers as they herd around 3,000 sheep to summer pastures in the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains of Montana.
It is a journey of almost three hundred kilometres through expansive green valleys, by fields of snow, and across hazardous, narrow ridges - a journey brimming with challenges. The aging shepherds do their very best to keep the hundreds of sheep together; the panoramic high mountains are teeming with hungry wolves and grizzly bears.
The mountains, the men and the sheep are beautifully shot in classic observational documentary style – with no narration to guide or influence you. The New York Times described the film as, ‘a graceful and often moving meditation on a disappearing way of life.’ Watch the trailer here.
‘Sweetgrass’ will be shown at 10.30am on Tuesday 21 March.
