Erotic Conversations about Contract and Consent at the Cinema - Dr. Kirsty Duncansen (La Trobe University) - Kent Law School Staff Seminar Series

I am interested in the relationship between law and bodies; how we might experience and understand law, generate and shape its meaning through our nerves, organs and flesh. The cinematic adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey provides a useful example to explore this. A contract lies at the heart of the narrative, operating as the generically required hurdle to the union of the romantic couple. Negotiations over the contract weave through patterns of consent and non-consent concerning sex and other intimate interactions. Told as a “pornographic” text, these interactions reach from the screen to the bodies of the audience, arousing and shocking, tantalising or even just boring them. This paper explores how the erotic aesthetics of Fifty Shades conspires with the narrative to engage the audience in pleasurable and unsettling understandings of contract and consent. Thus I also explore how bodies are involved in the generation of law.
