Event description

Ahoy Londoner!

Do you want to go on a rare London escape on Saturday the 24th of June?

We're going on an amazing 10 mile walk with a group of fellow adventurous Londoners (and you're coming with us :) ) Fancy strolling through wheat fields, forests, past babbling brooks, fields of horsey friends and finishing off with a dip in an open air Lido? If that sounds awesome, you've come to the right place.

Below you will find 5 sections: overview, travel, images, highlights and what to bring.

1. Escape overview:

A 10 mile walk following the River Chess in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Approx walking time (4-5 hours with breaks/stops).

Cost = £7.00

Included = guided walk (just turn up and enjoy) and coffee/tea/soft drink during walk (at cafe).

2. Escape travel:

It's super easy....both the start (Rickmansworth) and end points (Chesham) have tube stations making is uber easy to get out and back to London.

3. Escape images:

See the photos below or for more of our escape snaps follow the link https://www.meetup.com/RareLondonEscapes/photos/27935799/

Escape highlights:

We will start our walk in the historic settlement of Rickmansworth. The town’s history spans more than 1,000 years. Its three local rivers, Colne, Chess and Gade, supplied water for industries including papermaking, milling and watercress growing.

We walk past the following... (more info will be given about each during the escape)

Royal Masonic School (oldest girls school in country)

Glen Chess (large imposing old house)

Chorleywood House (house and estate which is now Local Nature Reserve)

Watercress Beds (amazing watercress fields - natures superfood)

Frogmore Meadows (A Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest - think wild flowers and water voles)

Latimer (A village which is made up of a number of 17th and 18th Century houses around a village green)

Blackwell Hall (The site of the ancient manor of that name, the current house dates from the tudor period - very impressive)

Weirhouse Mill (This is the most complete and well preserved mill on the river).

Canons' Mill (This was the site of a Saxon corn mill, referred to in the Domesday Book)

Meades Water Gardens (watercress beds and ornamental gardens)

****Lido Swim**** - As long as everything goes to plan and we arrive between 4 and 5:30pm at our end point you should get the opportunity to swim in one of the best Lido's I've ever been in (see more here). Additional cost = £6.00

Escape packing list:

• Suitable walking clothes & hiking footwear (tracks can be muddy)

• Swim stuff (if you want a dip in the Lido at the end)

• Water (at least 1 litre)

• Packed lunch/picnic

• Money for drinks and refreshments after the hike + £6 for Lido.

• That's it! I'll take care of all logistics all you have to do is turn up and enjoy.
