Lots of people can lose weight on a diet – the problem is the vast majority of them put it all back on again. In this workshop, Dr John Briffa will reveal how to achieve sustainable weight loss using approaches based on cutting-edge science as well as his clinical experience with thousands of individuals over his 20-year career as a doctor specialising in nutrition.
The workshop will explore what happens to the body when we take conventional advice to ‘eat less and exercise more’. Dr John will show how these approaches cause the body to ‘defend its weight’ and doom us to failure in the long term.
Dr John will then reveal how to overcome all the common pitfalls of common weight loss strategies. He will explain how not all calories are created equal, and how to eat in a way which will allow fat loss and maintain the metabolism without inducing hunger or feelings of deprivation. Comprehensive advice will be given on exercise too, and in particular the forms of exercise that are most effective for shifting fat and enhancing health.
The workshop will also include critical information on how to deal with issues that can sabotage our attempts to lose weight including negative body image, food cravings and compulsive eating. Specific guidance and instruction will be given on how to dissolve these issues and ensure success using both biochemical and psychological strategies.
During the Escape the Diet Trap workshop you will learn:
The 10 reasons why eating a calorie-controlled diet makes sustained weight loss virtually impossible.
Why the less hungry you are, the more weight you'll lose.
The foods that satisfy hunger most effectively.
How different types of calorie have different fattening potential, and which to emphasize for effective fat loss.
Why weight is not just about calories, but the impact our diet has on key hormones including insulin and leptin.
Why you can stop worrying about saturated fat and the impact it has on your cholesterol level.
Why you should ignore foods labelled 'low fat' or 'light'.
Why and how to skip meals to accelerate fat loss, and the one caveat that ensures success from this strategy.
Why eating unhealthy foods occasionally need not derail you from your weight and health goals, and can actually work in your favour in the long term.
Why aerobic exercise has little impact on weight loss, and the type of exercise that does.
The simple mental tricks and tools to ensure healthy change becomes an effective, enjoyable and sustainable part of your life.
Effective strategies for neutralising negative self-talk, food cravings and compulsive eating.

We're very excited to be launching The Mumsnet Academy - a brand new enterprise which aims to curate a portfolio of fantastic courses to fit around family commitments and busy working lives.
A while back we asked you what courses you would like and the programme of masterclasses, workshops, and events we've come up with is a reflection of your responses.
To help us deliver the programme we have enlisted some fabulous experts in a range of fields as well as teaming up with some great partners who have a reputation for delivering high-quality, life-changing courses.
This collaborative approach allows us to offer a programme across a range of different subjects including entrepreneurship, business, technology, social media, blogging, history of art, creative writing, publishing, gardening, philosophy, finance, fashion as well as courses concerned with self-improvement and the concept of learning to live wisely and well. Some of these courses will be skill-based, while others will explore concepts, theory and ideas.
If we've missed something you think is a must, fear not, we will be adding classes to our portfolio all the time so please drop us a line or complete the suggestion box on our website.
One of the things that we felt was important was to ensure our Academy courses are available across the UK and we are pleased to announce that we will be running events in Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Manchester from day one. We are also keen to develop some online courses and hope to announce the first of these later this year.
While our courses are scheduled at times which are more convenient for those with young children, they are absolutely open to everyone. Ultimately, the overall aim of the Mumsnet Academy is to bring people together in a thought-provoking and fulfilling environment where there is a universal willingness to explore ideas, develop skills, and learn from experts as well from each other.
