Event description
A wonderful celebration of Martha Graham’s life and legacy featuring powerful contemporary dance

About this event

This landmark virtual Gala Performance is a climactic finish to a week-long celebration of the life and legacy of the great American choreographer Martha Graham featuring:

Lamentation, Graham’s iconic signature solo, performed by Blakeley White-McGuire presented by arrangement with Martha Graham Resources;

I am not an Indian dancer?, Balbir Singh’s latest work commissioned by ESD and inspired by two dancers, one grounded in Graham technique and the other in Kathak.

We are also proud to present two performances by the participants in the ESD Presents Martha Graham Professional Intensive:

An excerpt from Graham’s Dark Meadow Suite; and

Lament, a new work created collaboratively by the dancers and Eliot Smith, ESD’s Artistic Director.

Organiser of ESD Presents Martha Graham: Virtual Gala Performance

Eliot Smith Dance, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a touring contemporary dance company, led by its Artistic Director, Eliot Smith.

The Company comprises technically and theatrically accomplished male and female dancers drawn from the UK and throughout the world. Dancers have come from as far afield as Italy, Germany, France, Colombia, New Zealand, Spain and Cyprus. They perform dance works created by Eliot Smith and invited internationally acclaimed choreographers.

The dance works created by Eliot Smith are built on strength, physical speed and rich emotional narratives. His music choice combines rhythmic excitement, raw emotional power and spiritual reflection. They arerooted in Eliot’s previous dancetraining with London Contemporary Dance School and the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York.

The Company enjoys working in theatres and non-traditional venues such as cathedrals and local memorial halls, aiming to excite and inspire its audiences regardless of their dance experience or knowledge.

ESD prides itself on bringing new audiences to contemporary dance with its accessible dance programmes which it tours throughout the region in both urban and rural settings.

Over the past 10 years the Company has developed a great deal in terms of audience attendance, sell-out performances, website and online social media activity, outreach programmes, and exciting collaborations with some of theregion’s major museums, galleries,universities, cathedrals and dance organisations.

ESD premières new dance works in the summer and winter seasons, and tours throughout the spring season, including regular dance performances at leading national events and exhibitions.

ESD has performed by invitation in Paris, Rome and New York.
