About this event
Our book club sessions are open, friendly and informal. They are running online for now. There are no expectations for you to have extensive knowledge on the writer, their work or specific topics - the book club is created to be a safe space for us to share thoughts, questions and ideas around what we are reading. Open to readers of all backgrounds.
For our June book club session, we are reading Jesse Q. Sutanto's black comedy Dial A for Aunties (2021). A hilariously quirky novel that is equal parts murder mystery, rom-com, and a celebration of mothers and daughters as well as a deep dive into Chinese-Indonesian culture. Pitched as "Crazy Rich Asians meets Weekend at Bernie's" and described as "more than a great read—it’s an experience. K-drama meets telenovela with a side of rom-com" ... a lighter read as we approach summer days!
Jesse Q. Sutanto grew up shuttling back and forth between Indonesia, Singapore, and Oxford, and considers all three places her home. She has a Masters from Oxford University, but she has yet to figure out how to say that without sounding obnoxious. Jesse has forty-two first cousins and thirty aunties and uncles, many of whom live just down the road. She used to game but with two little ones and a husband, she no longer has time for hobbies. She aspires to one day find one (1) hobby.
