ESFF: 'Los Aitas' (Borja Cobeaga, 2025)

The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, is hosting a new session dedicated to promoting Spanish language through cinema, featuring the screening of Los Aitas [Breaking Walls].

This event is exclusively for secondary school students and aims to foster interest in the Spanish language and culture through film.

Synopsis

It is the late 1980s, and a group of fathers from the working-class periphery of Bilbao in northern Spain, are suddenly faced with a challenge, which, though completely disinterested, they must affront. Their daughters are all involved with a rhythmic gymnastics group, preparing for an important competition to be held in Berlin, which they are all eager to attend. As the mothers, busy working, cannot accompany them, los aitas - the fathers, in Basque - are left to the task. The resulting portrayal of fatherhood is both tender and filled with laughs, which is to be expected when leaving a group of fathers to chaperone a group of girls, who, it appears, often seem to be much more aware of what is going on around them.

Sinopsis

A finales de los años ochenta, un grupo de padres de la periferia obrera de Bilbao, en el norte de España, se enfrentan de repente a un reto que, aunque totalmente poco experimentados, deben afrontar. Sus hijas forman parte de un grupo de gimnasia rítmica, y pronto se celebrará en Berlín una importante competición de este deporte a la que todas quieren asistir. Como las madres, ocupadas con sus trabajos, no pueden acompañarlas, los aitas - los padres, en euskera - quedan a su cargo. El retrato resultante de la paternidad es a la vez tierno y gracioso, lo que es de esperarse cuando se deja a un grupo de padres acompañando a un grupo de chicas, que, al parecer, son mucho más conscientes de lo que sucede a su alrededor.
