ESG Risk Management: Assurance over Compliance to Support the Transition

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programs may seem like just recycled versions of sustainability and corporate social responsibility activities. They are not.

The global forces driving energy transition/transformation are changing the license to operate for energy companies. Rather than tolerating good faith efforts, investors, regulators, multilateral agencies and NGOs are now demanding additional levels of assurance around ESG targets.

Energy companies must respond with a risk-based approach. To survive, risk tools and techniques previously only applied to HSE, project and financial risk need to be applied to social and governance issues as well. For example, global regulators are now requiring risk-based (rather than check the box legal compliance) approaches to governance issues such as foreign corrupt practices.

This webinar will discuss how a risk-based approach to ESG issues is allowing energy companies to survive and thrive during the energy transition/transformation.

Presenter - Mr. Scott Randall, BSCE, MBA

Mr. Randall is founder of the risk management training and consulting company, Plus Alpha LLC and is Americas Director for Global Business Management Consultants, a project management training company.

He has over 40 years of experience across the fields of project management, financial and operational risk management, due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, international marketing, strategic planning and capital project development. Mr. Randall has been a professor at the University of Houston’s Cullen School of Engineering and the Bauer College of Business where he has taught ESG Risk Management, enterprise risk management and numerous other risk and project management programs at the graduate level. He also teaches project management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Scott has worked domestically and internationally with oil and gas, electric power and service companies such as Boots & Coots International Well Control, Shell, Marathon, Duke Energy International, GDF Suez, BG, PdVSA, Pemex and Aramco to help them identify, assess, and manage their major enterprise risks.

He is the author of the 2019 AIPN Research Paper on corruption enforcement trends in the Global Petroleum Industry. He is also the author of a textbook on Enterprise Risk titled, Energy, Risk and Competitive Advantage: The Information Imperative published by PennWell.

He received a BS in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University, an MBA in International Management from Thunderbird and has done post-graduate work in Energy Risk Management at the University of Houston and Rice University. He is an active member of the Project Management Institute and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
