Start point: Dalegarth Station, Boot
Length: 6.3km (4miles) with 150m (480ft) of ascent
Time: 3.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 3 (see grade description below)
This walk begins from Dalegarth Station and follows the River Esk before culminating in the short, steep ascent of Stanley Ghyll with stunning views from a viewing platform along the gorge and over the surrounding mountains. Visits to 16th century St Catherine’s and Eskdale Mill, one of the oldest water-powered mills in England, are on the route.
Paths are generally good but there are some sections that are stony and others that will be muddy in poor weather.
The start time of the walk has been deliberately chosen to give participants the opportunity to combine the walk with a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway (La'al Ratty). The 10:25 train from Ravenglass will arrive at Dalegarth Station at approximately 11:10. There is a return train at 16:10 from Dalegarth Station. It is advisable to book train tickets in advance from the railway (https://ravenglass-railway.co.uk).
Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
