About this event

Espacios Increíbles 2020

What is espacios increíbles?

Following the successful pilot last year, this exciting competition, using Spanish, design team work and creativity is now officially open to secondary schools across all local authorities in Scotland to take part this year. Learners will work in teams to research and design a building in a Spanish speaking area.

They will present their design in Spanish, and then go forward to represent their school at national level. The finalists will take part in a live event at the University of Strathclyde where their designs will be judged by industry professionals and academics. The winners (as part of their prize) will have their model made in 3D by the School of Architecture.

Who is it for?

espacios increíbles is aimed at learners in S3: however by adapting the resources, it could be used with any age group.

How does espacios increíbles work?

There are clear stages to the project, and it is very easy to do!

1. Choose your classes/ groups.

2. Use the online resources (reading, listening, and logbook) to work your way through the planning phase.

3. For the design phase, ask your design/ technical/ art department to lend support.

4. Once groups have completed their design, they will then need to present it in Spanish.

5. Finally choose the winning design to represent your school and submit a short video of their presentation to SCILT. Schools selected to take part in the live final in early December will be informed by October 31st 2020.

Why should we do espacios increíbles in our school?

This is a highly motivating project for learners and it has had a positive effect on uptake in the senior phase for those schools who participated in the pilot in 2019. View this video to find out more.

The skills focus delivers on key aspects of Developing Young Workforce. The learner materials are available online, and can be easily adapted to suit your chosen group. All materials are designed to fulfil evidence requirements for achieving Level 4 Benchmarks.

Is there any support?

All the resources for espacios increíbles are available on the SCILT website. These include:

• Video interviews with teachers and students talking about the benefits of the project

• Lesson plans and a learner log book to work through

• Reading and listening activities matched to Level 4 Benchmarks

Find out more about the project on Twitter - #espaciosincreibles

If you are interested to get your school involved, register your interest by Friday 27 March.

SCILT can also provide further support to participating schools. Should you require this, please contact Lisa Hanna, Professional Development Officer:
