About this event

ESRC Seminar Series CASCADE-NET: Civil Agency, Society and Climate Adaptation to Weather Extremes

Seminar 9: Capacity building within Civil Society: long term resilience to extreme weather risk

We are pleased to announce a one-day virtual ‘conference’ exploring different perspectives on capacity building within Civil Society for long term resilience to extreme weather risk and climate change.

The conference is co-hosted by the Centre for Water, Communities and Resilience, University of the West of England, Bristol, UK National Flood Forum and Climate Outreach.

Date/time: 9.15-17.30 UK GMT. Wed 4th November 2020 (8.50 am onwards for logon)

Venue: Virtual. Further details to be provided on registration.

  • The ‘conference’ will return to the dichotomies discussed in CASCADE-NET Seminar 1, and draw creatively across the themes from the eight seminars

Questions to be explored:

  • What is the learning about the roles and capacity building needs of civil society and agency - nationally and internationally - as evidenced from current risk contexts – recent flooding and droughts, bushfires, compound risks and COVID-19?
  • What could ‘capacity building for development of longer-term resilience’ to extreme weather risk look like?

We will also reflect on:

  • What are the key thematic areas around developing civil agency and extreme weather adaptation for future research bid proposals?
  • How the CASCADE-NET evidence base could be drawn together, and built on, in a collective writing project.

Speakers will be from academia, policy and practice including Civic Society, Government, Resilience Agencies and Academia. Confirmed speakers include: Dr Brian Cook (University of Melbourne), Teresa Bridgeman (Chair, West Somerset Flood Group), Professor João Porto de Albuquerque (University of Warwick) and Dr Fernanda Lima-Silva (Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil), and Dr Uta Wehn (IHE Delft Institute for Water Education).

The seminar will have a strong focus on group discussion and participation. For further information or queries, please contact: CASCADE.NET@uwe.ac.uk
