About this Event

What makes a healthy space? Where do we feel the most well? How do our surroundings influence the ways we live, think, and feel?

In the 21st century, spaces of mental health are changing: where once asylums, hospitals and workhouses were responsible for the treatment – and containment – of mental health problems, the boundaries that mark out today’s spaces of health management are transient, negotiated, and blurred. As the responsibility for matters of mental health shifts continually from the NHS to local councils, voluntary organisations, and individuals, the spaces in which we seek the experience of wellness are becoming increasingly distant from traditional institutions.

In this event, speakers from Aberystwyth University will shine a light upon the changing landscapes of mental health, sharing insights from research regarding four spaces of mental health and wellbeing: the mental hospital, the crisis house, the woodland, and the home. In this series of talks, PhD students Alexandra Hird, Eleri Phillips, and Kittie Belltree will discuss their research about spaces of mental health from the diverse disciplines of international politics, human geography, and creative writing. Dr Elizabeth, a senior lecturer, will discuss the challenges of representing the life and legacy of a mental hospital.

In addition, this event will feature performances from MaDCaff, a Disability Arts Cymru project that organises open mic events and pop-up cafes to provide opportunities for people living with mental illness to showcase their musical talents and support others to do the same.

We hope to produce a tangible legacy from this event by inviting you to contribute towards two interactive workshops: designing our own ideal spaces of mental health (following Madlove’s A Designer Asylum project) and a textile project connecting quilts, collaborative crafts, and wellbeing.

Stallholders will include New Pathways, Tir Coed, and Aber Food Surplus.
