Description

Essay Film Festival Prelude 1: The Cinema of Stephen Dwoskin and Trying to Kiss the Moon
Saturday 10 February 1:00 – 5:30
In collaboration with the Dwoskin Archive in Special Collections & The School of Art, Reading University

This screening and discussion, the first in a series of Dwoskin-related events, provides an introduction to the work of Stephen Dwoskin through his autobiographical montage-film Trying to Kiss the Moon (1994, 95 mins) and the early Channel 4 programme The Cinema of Stephen Dwoskin (1984, 60 minutes), directed by Anna Ambrose and shot by Roger Deakins.
Dwoskin’s friend Laura Mulvey wrote on its release that Trying to Kiss the Moon “tells the double story of memory, bringing together the beauty of its documents and the sadness of its elusiveness”; since Dwoskin’s death in 2012, and in the context of those documents’ technological obsolescence, it has taken on new meanings.
These new meanings as well as the contexts of the films' production will be explored and discussed by a panel including Rachel Garfield (University of Reading), Darragh O'Donoghue (University of Reading), and Henry K. Miller (Slade School of Fine Art) with Alison Butler (Film, Theatre and TV Department, University of Reading) as Chair.
