About this event

A chance to discuss challenges, discover new strategies and build confidence in communicating with people when they are confused, angry or distressed.

Overview

This workshop aims to support staff who regularly meet patients and their carers.

It will focus on specific, key skills for effective and compassionate communication.

It will build on existing skills and knowledge using real-life examples interactive exercises and demonstrations.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the challenges of working with people in distressing or difficult situations
  • Recognise the ways in which distress can be conveyed and explore skills and strategies for responding to emotional reactions and/or questions
  • Explore key communication skills for conveying difficult information (e.g. cancelled appointment), active listening and supporting

Teaching Methods

We will build on your skills and experience through discussion and experiential activities.

There will be an opportunity to see the skills in action using a live demonstration.

Front line health and social care staff, booking clerks, medical secretaries, ward/clinic staff, pharmacy staff, receptionists

  • Joining instructions will be sent via email two to four weeks before the course commences.
  • Payment must be made before the course commences. We reserve the right to cancel a booking in the case of non-receipt of payment prior to the first day of the course.

  • In the event of a cancellation: A charge of 25% of the course fee will be made for cancellations up to 6 weeks prior to the workshop date; a charge of 50% of the course fee will be made between 4 and 6 weeks prior to the workshop; no refund will be given for cancellation within 4 weeks of the workshop; suitable replacement delegates will be accepted up to 3 days prior to the course.
