Event Details

The University of Edinburgh, in partnership with The Wee Spoke Hub, is offering free Essential Skills Training to students and staff. These courses are designed to boost your cycling confidence and knowledge, and ensure you can cycle more safely on the roads around Edinburgh. Courses last 3 hours and are suitable for cyclists of all abilities.

The course includes:

  1. Basic bike maintenance, safety checks, and bike set-up.
  2. Skills training - including bike manoeuvring, braking, control and road positioning.
  3. On-road skills - an opportunity to ride in traffic using your new skills with the guidance of an instructor.

The course covers levels 1, 2 and 3 of the national Bikeability cycling proficiency curriculum, which will prepare you to deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to University. The course is designed for cyclists who want to learn how to ride safely and confidently.

The session will start with a discussion about bike safety and a few games to develop your basic cycling skills. We will progress to the fundamentals of cycling in traffic such as road position and manoeuvring before heading out to some quiet roads where you will put what you have learned into practice. Finally, if time and the overall progress of the group allows, we will move to a busier area and use your new skills at traffic junctions.
