Location: The Old School, Ashley Green, Bucks and Hockeridge & Pancake Woods.

About: This short course provides an overview of the key considerations and issues when caring for a woodland. It serves as an excellent introduction for those who are new to woodland ownership or interested in the practical aspects of caring for a woodland. The course will cover some of the key concepts of forestry and conservation, and include a guided tour of the nearby RFS Hockeridge & Pancake woods, to view stands of different species, various silvicultural treatments, and to consider forestry and conservation objectives.

Duration: 10.00am to 4.00pm

Price: £65.00 RFS members / £75.00 non RFS members

Notes:  Refreshments (tea and coffee) will be provided but course attendees are advised to bring a packed lunch.  Bring outdoor clothing for the afternoon session. Copies of Julian's book, "Getting started in your own wood" will be available for £10.00 i.e. 25% discount.

About the tutor:

Julian is immediate past president of the Institute of Chartered Foresters and presently chairs the Forestry Commission’s Expert Committee on Forest Science. However he has a keen interest in caring for and managing smaller woodlands as he has owned one himself of 30 acres for more than 30 years. He has written several books about his experiences as an owner including ‘Getting Started in Your Own Wood’ (Permanent Publications).  He is a member of RFS Council and of the Editorial Board of QJF.
