Course Tutor: Professor Julian Evans OBE FICFor

Course Description:

An introductory course for those new to or unfamiliar with owning or caring for woodland. The first lecture explores the topics of what’s involved, how much time it takes, the many ways one can enjoy a wood, questions of access, and the basics of silviculture.

The second lecture examines boundaries and other legal responsibilities, insurance questions, researching woodland history, elements of planning and some management essentials.

A  special feature will be an afternoon visit to the nearby Northdown Plantation, Julian's own wood, with stops looking in details at point introduced in the lectures.

Outline programme

  • 10.00 - 10.30             Registration, coffee & tea.
  • 10.30 - 10.40             Introductions
  • 10.40 - 11.30             Caring for woodland - first steps
  • 11.40 - 11.45             Tea & Coffee
  • 11.45 - 12.30             Caring for woodland - getting to grips
  • 12.30 - 14.00             Travel to Northdown Plantation (10 mins) and lunch
  • 14.00 - 15.30             Woodland visit and on-site activity & discussion
  • 15.30 - 16.00             Review of day & refreshments

Morning

  • St Mary’s Hall, 8 High Street, Overton RG25 3HA. 
  • Free parking at Overton Hill car park RG25 3NU which is 250 m from hall and 5 min walk.

Lunch & Afternoon

  • Northdown Plantation, S. Litchfield RG25 3BP
  • Free parking in entrance to wood.

Other

  • Bring outdoor clothing for afternoon visit.
  • Bring your own packed lunch.
  • Coffee and tea provided on arrival.
  • Copies of Julian’s book ‘Getting Started in Your Own Wood’ will be available at £10 i.e. 25% off.
