Course Description:

This course introduces participants to the theory and practice of measuring felled timber, standing trees, and woodlands. The reasons for different measurement techniques will be discussed and participants will gain practical experience in a range of these techniques.

The course will be based on traditional methods of measurement, using tapes and angle devices, as these are highly appropriate to small scale woodland owners. Recent developments, such as electronic measurement and laser sighting will also be discussed.

Course Learning Objectives:

On completion of this course, participants will

  • Be able to measure the volume of felled trees
  • Be able to measure the height and diameter of standing trees
  • Be able to estimate the volume of stands of trees
  • Understand the basis of the Yield Class system for predicting future growth of stands
