Essentials of Electrophoresis Workshop: Biotech Back-to-Basics

The goal of this 2.5-hour lab is to immerse you in the practical world of DNA gel electrophoresis and restriction enzyme-based DNA manipulation.

You’ll create stunning DNA gel art while mastering essential techniques used in scientific research! Inspired by Paul Vanouse’s Art project and his Latent Figure Protocol, this lab offers a unique opportunity to blend creativity with molecular biology. By visualizing DNA fragments of varying lengths, you’ll gain firsthand experience in a process critical for verifying DNA sequences.

This lab aims to enhance your understanding of core molecular biology concepts, including the mechanism of gel electrophoresis, the function of restriction enzymes, and the interpretation of DNA banding patterns.Through hands-on experience, you will gain skills in:

Meet your Instructor

Digby Usher is Director and Co-Founder of Lifefabs Institute: Biofabrication Lab & Research Centre in London, UK. As the UK’s first open-access materials makerspace and scientific wet-lab, it supports graduate architectural researchers, biodesigners and scientists to bring with research grade-equipment and project support. As Director, he manages the interdisciplinary research groups, themes and research projects that work invent the future of Biodesign, architecture, materials science and healthcare.His own design profession is oriented towards material design and biology focuses between low-cost prosthetics from milk and engineering materials, which led him to be a course co-lead for MIT Media Lab’s Synthetic Biology course for Europe.
