Hosted by the School of Forensic and Applied Sciences, University of Central Lancashire, Preston

This workshop will cover the theory and practice of some of the methods used in forensic anthropology and related sciences to estimate Post-Mortem Interval (PMI) in human remains. Estimation of PMI is one of the key areas in forensic taphonomy, and has application to both forensic casework and research.

The workshop will be led by experienced forensic practitioners, and will comprise of a morning of focussed lectures on the theory and forensic application of various techniques spanning from the early Post-Mortem period, through decomposition and putrefaction, to full skeletonisation and beyond. The afternoon will comprise a hands-on practical laboratory session in which three techniques will be practically applied by participants to simulated forensic cases.

Subjects covered will include: an overview of decomposition processes; early Post-Mortem changes; the role of forensic entomology; insect development and succession; the use of Accumulated Degree Days (ADD) and Total Body Scoring; skeletonisation; and time-dependant osseous changes in sub-aerial and sub-surface contexts. The practical elements will focus on PMI from: Viteous Humour Potassium Levels; ADD and the use of Total Body Scoring; and time and context dependant changes in dry bones.

Places will be strictly limited to 35 participants, and is free for CIfA members. A few places may be available for non-CIfA members depending on uptake, at a cost of £10 (payable on the day).

Registration will take place from 09:00 to 10:00 in the Foster Building of the University. Attendees will be emailed further details of the event, and a guide to university parking. Please contact the organiser if you have any additional questions.
