Event description

Description

China is fast becoming a cashless society. Mainland Chinese stores and services are increasingly centred around mobile payment apps like WeChatPay and AliPay, so much so that Chinese mobile payment volumes more than doubled to $5trillion last year.

The Chinese mobile pay habit has big implications and presents big opportunities for destinations, like Edinburgh, aspiring to increase the volume and value of Chinese inbound tourism. According to the state news agency, more than 6 million Chinese travelled abroad during October’s "Golden Week" national holiday alone. But what are the different types of payment methods used? How do they work? Who uses them? And how do Scottish tourism businesses get involved?

This breakfast briefing, run by Edinburgh Tourism Action Group in partnership with Scottish Enterprise will present an overview of Chinese spending habits and in particular the most popular Chinese payment systems: AliPay, UnionPay and WeChatPay.

The briefing will be led by China Retail specialist Steven Hope, who will provide a detailed analysis on the Chinese spending and payment landscape. For important context, Premier Tax Free will present their latest statistics and trends on Chinese spend in Edinburgh, Scotland and the UK. The session will end with short briefings from representatives or agents from each payment provider, enabling businesses to make direct connections.
