Description

Etched Lino and Linocut Workshop

Tutor: Steve Edwards

In this two day workshop you will work with Steve to produce two A4 lino blocks. One block will be etched by using a caustic etching solution which gives wonderful tonal effects. The second lino block will be traditionally cut and marked. The two will then be printed together by overlaying them.

Schedule

Day 1

  • Steve will show his work, show demo blocks that he has prepared to explain the stop-out method and the painting directly onto the plate method.
  • Steve will look at attendees images, and talk about ways of working with them, how to transfer onto lino and/or separate elements.
  • Explain the caustic etch in detail and start to prepate plates (both cut and etch)
  • Etched plate stop-out and drying / cutting of block
  • Demo mixing caustic and application

Day 2

  • Clean off caustic and stop-out and leave to dry
  • Final cutting/editing/proofing of the individual blocks
  • Demo registration
  • Printing

About Etched Lino and Linocut

Linocut is a popular printmaking technique which can easily be practised at home with very little equipment. It is very versatile, allowing for both bold, expressive marks and controlled detail. By varying the way the block is inked and printed a variety of textures can be created. Etching lino gives a totally new way to create images on the block, from fluid brush marks to rich textures.
