Ethics goes digital: who’s calling the shots?

30 May 2016, 11:00 – 12:30, Brussels

Ethos’, the Greek word from which ethics is derived, meant a habit or custom. At its most basic level, ethics provides a framework likely to inform our actions, whether as individuals or collectively. As long as ethics remains subjective, it has little value. Therefore governments have traditionally been in charge, at least implicitly, to tell right from wrong.

Widespread ICT-induced empowerment of individuals has proved a game-changer across the board, and that includes ethics. Governments, industry and civil society struggle with a wealth of novel issues whose solution, rooted in ethical choices, will shape our future.

So now is the time to ponder the ethical dimension of how society is transformed. On setting up an Ethics Advisory Group back in January, EDPS Giovanni Buttarelli made it clear why he took this decision: “The EDPS, with the support of an Ethics Advisory Group, has started his work to reconsider the ethical dimension of the relationship between human rights, technology, markets and business models and their implications for the right to privacy and data protection in the digital environment. With the help of this group we intend to identify a new ethical approach”.

While it may take more than 90 minutes to identify this approach, the DiPP is proud to bring you a panel of distinguished experts happy to share and discuss with you their perspective on how to take advantage of the fact that values have never stopped shaping our lives at every step of the way.

The Digital in Practice Programme takes over our successful Cloud in Practice Programme to take open the debate to all digital matters. DIGITALEUROPE aims to make a case for the digital industry’s activities and to evidence the solid and positive impact digital services will make on the European economy. These workshops will demonstrate best practice and deep dive into the issues, thus providing a powerful education platform for the industry and political stakeholders to share information and discuss opportunities digital can bring to Europe.
