This is ONLINE bookbinding course via Zoom and contains 4 sessions 2hour long each one. Your Zoom link will be sent to you approx. 24h before each session directly to your email as well as the recording of each session which will be sent to your email shortly after each session. Please tune in 5mins before the start. As all 4 sessions will be recorded if you can’t make live some of the sessions or none at all, you still can sign up and create it at your own convenience. Written handout will be emailed to all participants as PDF too. Lots of support between the sessions offered through emails.

This fascinating historical binding is so beautiful and originates from Ethiopia and Eritrea 15th-16th century. It has a few distinctive features like the chain link stitch, wooden boards, large turn ins, plaited headbands, fabric lining inside the covers and traditional pattern of blind tooling often with a cross feature.

You will need:

1. SUNDAY 12th June 10.30-12.30 (stitching book block)

Materials:

- 66 pieces of cartridge paper 110-130gsm, 14.8 x 21cm, short grain (folded in half and arranged into 22 sections with 3 folios inside each one)

- 2 wooden boards, 10.6 x 15.4 x 0.5cm

- waxed linen thread (No18 Barbour), 3-4 meters

Tools:

- electric drill with 1.5mm drill bit/s

- razor saw or craft knife

- finishing/lying press (if you have one)

- metal ruler

- pencil

- scissors

- awl

- 4 needles (straight or curved)

2. SUNDAY 19th June, 10.30 -12.30 (covering in leather)

Materials:

- piece of leather 21 x 33cm, 7-8mm thickness

- 2 pieces of cotton patterned fabric (not too thick or too thin, medium weight), 10.5 x 15.3cm

- PVA glue and brush

- Wheat flour paste (recipe for homemade wheat flour paste will be sent to you few days prior to the session) and larger brush

- non-sticky paper (grease proof), A4

Tools:

- finishing press (if you have one)

- leather paring knife & piece of marble or scalpel holder with 10 round blades and shiny glossy tile

- scissors

- craft knife

- metal ruler

3. SUNDAY 26th June, 10.30-12.30 (headbands)

Materials:

- 4 strips of leather, 0.5 x 12cm (the same colour as the binding or different)

- 1meter of waxed linen thread

Tools:

- needle (straight or curved)

- awl

- scissors

- craft knife or pointy end scalpel

- metal ruler

4. SUNDAY 3rd July, 10.30 -12.15 (decoration: blind tooling)

Tools:

- electric stove or bookbinding stove

- couple of decorative tools for blind tooling to create straight lines and round small circles
