Etsy Shibori and indigo dyeing - Part 1 - Binding and stitching
Come and learn Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing using indigo, the most magical blue in the world. Learn the basic binding and stitched techniques and then design your own pattern before dyeing your piece in the indigo vat. You’ll walk away not only with a stylish bag, but also the knowledge and skills to dye other fabrics at home. Imagine all the other things you can dye!
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you also take Part 2, Itajime Clamp Resist, the second course is only £30, a total of £70 for both courses and a saving of 12.5% (£10)
Over the 2.5 hour workshop you’ll master the following stitching and binding skills and learn all about indigo:
– The basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work
– How to make the kumo (spiderweb) and tesugi (stripes) patterns using binding
– The three basic stitches – running stitch, ori nui (teeth) and maki nui (chevrons)
– How to create filled shapes (maki-age) using stitching and binding
– How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat made from Mayan indigo
Instructions on how to create and maintain your own indigo vat at home will be provided.
Suitable for complete beginners. A good quality strong 5oz cotton tote bag is included in the price of the workshop. All other materials and tools are provided.
NOTE: You are welcome to bring a cotton item from home to dye as well. Good choices would be a cotton tee-shirt, plain white cotton shirt or blouse, an old cotton pillowcase or cotton/linen napkins.
NOTE: If you bring items from home they must have been washed. Otherwise the indigo dye may not take. Synthetic fibres cannot be dyed with indigo so please only bring natural fibres if you wish to dye your own items.
Please note that your finished piece will still be wet when you leave the workshop and will need to be washed separately at home to remove any remaining indigo. Once washed indigo dyed pieces are completely colour fast and can be washed safely in the washing machine in any coloured wash.
IMPORTANT: Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. Indigo splashes stain fabric!
