Event description

Description

Over the Mayfair Art Weekend, Eugenie Vronskaya will be working on the final series of portrait heads of fellow artists, collectors and collaborators, using the gallery space as her studio and some of the art weekend visitors as her models. To celebrate 25 years in Mayfair, the John Martin Gallery has embarked on ambitious portrait project with the painter Eugenie Vronskaya. To pay tribute to the many friends involved in the gallery over the last 25 years, the artist has embarked on a series of portrait heads of fellow artists, collectors and collaborators.

The completed series will be unveiled at Mayfair Art Weekend in the form of an Ikonostas like those found in a Russian Orthodox Church - akin to a Rood screen in an English church. Eugenie Vronskaya had a rigorous fine art training at the Fine Art University in Moscow before becoming the first Russian student at the Royal College Art following a residency in the U.S on the invitation of Sir Anthony Caro. Her work is held in the collections of the Pushkin Museum, New Trt’ykov Gallery, Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum and holds regular exhibition in Scotland and in London with the John Martin Gallery.

Eugenie does not consider herself a conventional portrait painter and is not interested in producing a photographic likeness or working within the constraints of a commission, but her years of academic training in Moscow has given the artist the ability to work with confidence and speed and to maintain the vitality of the sitter. With most paintings completed in a single sitting, the finished project will offer a remarkable record of each encounter.
