Description of the Event :
Europe today faces profound shifts — from global trade tensions to changing political dynamics within the Union. In his keynote, Phil Hogan will reflect on these challenges and opportunities, drawing on his experience as Ireland’s Minister for the Environment and as former EU Commissioner for Agriculture and for Trade. With insights from international negotiations, including the MERCOSUR agreement and transatlantic trade relations, he will explore how Europe can adapt and thrive in an age of change.
Biography of the speaker :
Phil Hogan hardly needs an introduction to a Brussels or Irish audience. From Minister of State at the Department of Finance, he was appointed Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government. In 2016 he moved to Brussels as EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner, and later briefly as Commissioner for Trade. Among his achievements as Minister in Ireland he pioneered a law that successfully improved the participation of women candidates in national politics.
As Agriculture Commissioner he worked hard to improve relations with non-EU states and played a key role in the negotiations towards a MERCOSUR agreement. He favoured a strong response to the US on trade issues during the first Trump presidency. His speech will draw on his experience as an international negotiator.
