Event description

Description

We are delighted to welcome Assoc Prof Sonja Tiernan (Liverpool Hope University) to launch and introduce the first ever edition of the complete poetry of Eva Gore-Booth, Eva Gore-Booth: Collected Poems with foreword by President Michael D. Higgins, edited and introduced by Sonja Tiernan (Arlen House Press, 2018). Copies of Sonja's book will be on sale on the day courtesy of Arlen House.

This is the first publication of the complete poetry of the Irish social reformer and political campaigner Eva Gore-Booth. President Higgins describes Gore-Booth as 'a unique and revolutionary figure in the social history of our islands.' Born into Anglo-Irish aristocracy, she lived and worked in the poorest areas of Manchester at the turn of the twentieth century where she campaigned for a more just democracy by extending the vote to women and to the working classes. Unlike her suffragette colleagues Gore-Booth protested through constitutional means, she established trade unions so individuals could unite and protest unfair work practices and used her poetry to pursue freedom of speech during a time of heightened censorship in the midst of World War One and the fight for Irish independence.
