Evaluating Heritage Information

Taking evidence-led approaches to planning for the historic environment

Effective and reasoned decision-making based on clear evidence is essential in all aspects of planning. A well-structured resource exists to support the sustainable development of the historic environment. The course introduces some of the main resources and builds some essential skills to help apply them in development management. A series of case studies and exercises demonstrate the applications of heritage information in planning and highlight the value of taking an evidenceled approach.

Courses are for local authority planning officers and early career postgraduate heritage professionals working in the public sector only.

Essentials courses are not open to individuals working in the private sector.

Skills introduced are essential for development managers, strategic planners and those looking to establish a grounding in planning for the historic environment.

10:10 - Policy, Law and the role of Evidence: why should we use information and evidence?

Introduction to the legislative and policy framework that underpins the use of heritage information in the planning process

10:40 - Accessing the Resource: What makes up the evidence-base for planning with the historic environment?

The session explores some of the key materials and evidence-bases available, their applications in planning and where to access them

With opportunities for networking and discussion with heritage experts

11:30 - Exercise: Using historic environment information

A chance to get to grips with using some of the fundamental evidence-bases used in planning for the historic environment

12:10 - Improved Understanding: Developing more informed approaches to planning with the historic environment

The tools, evidence and resources that underpin successful place-shaping

13:40 - Understanding and Managing Impact: Applying heritage information in the planning process

Mechanisms, requirements and approaches for achieving sustainable development of the historic environment, including key advice, guidance and standards

A non-technical approach to building a basic understanding of the historic significance of a proposed development site

Building on the previous exercise, how to manage change and achieve sustainable development outcomes for the historic environment

Booking is essential for all courses as places are limited.

Please note, these training events are provided free of charge by Historic England, and places are at a premium. You can send a replacement or notify us by e mail if you book and then can’t attend. Non-attendance will incur a fee of £150 unless you contact us at least 5 days in advance.
