About this event

Module introduction

This module aims to equip practitioners with advanced clinical assessment skills to examine and critically evaluate a paediatric patient’s clinical condition and formulate differential diagnoses. Additional understanding of other clinical tests will enable the practitioner to include and exclude.

Through the exploration of physiology, pathophysiology, and the literature, participants will explore and critically evaluate the assessment and management of patients.

The clinical skills explored in this module will be consolidated in practitioner’s clinical practice therefore it is paramount learners have an identified clinical supervisor, who has the appropriate skill set and experience to support your development, i.e. an advanced nurse practitioner or consultant.

Module structure

This module consists of 8 learning blocks comprising of stimulating virtual workshops, online activities, forum discussions, clinical skills workshops and a portfolio of assessment to aid the current understanding of the clinical assessment from the experiences of the participant.

The assessment for this module will include, a patient case study viva, interaction on forums, and completing the practice assessment document.

This module does not carry any academic credits, however should students wish to gain academic credits for this module they can speak to the lead staff member for further guidance regarding utilising the APL (accreditation for prior learning), or completing work-based learning with a higher education institution - This process will carry an additional cost.

Learning aims

By the end of this module learners will be able to:

  • demonstrate and analyse a systematic, structured patient history taking
  • examine and critically evaluate a patient’s clinical condition
  • formulate and critically evaluate differential diagnoses utilising additional assessments and tests to include and exclude
  • construct and critically appraise an initial management plan
  • utilise appropriate tools to effectively communicate to other members of the multidisciplinary team

Entry requirements

Participants wishing to undertake this module should:

  • be supported by management
  • have an identified Clinical Supervisor with the appropriate skill set
  • already work in an environment where children are being treated and managed
  • work autonomously

Anyone who does not meet the criteria above and/or the panel's requirements will be contacted and have their booking cancelled.

Kings College London credits

This module is a stand-alone module, however there is the option to gain credits by completing a work based learning module through Kings College London (Level 6/7). This will incur an additional cost payable to Kings College.
