Event description
Evelyn De Morgan’s Revision of Greek Myths: A Female Aesthete’s Interpretation of the Italian Renaissance

About this event

How does Evelyn De Morgan thoughtfully reconsider the past in order to reassess the present and look forward to the future? This talk examines how female aesthete De Morgan reimagines significant female figures from mythology and the Renaissance that reemerge during the Aesthetic movement. The paintings Ariadne in Naxos, Deianira, and Flora reveal this shifting and challenging perspective which ultimately reclaims women as subjects and painters.

Leslie Howard is a doctoral student at the University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès under the direction of Catherine Delyfer and a lecturer at the University of Lorraine – Nancy. Her dissertation is titled “Reinventing Tradition in the Art of Evelyn Pickering De Morgan.” She also completed her masters at the University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès and her undergraduate studies at the University of Florida in Art History and Political Science. Her areas of research include Victorian art, Aestheticism, Pre-Raphaelitism, the Renaissance, mythology, and gender studies.
