Description

About the talk

An illustrated talk will look at some the historical aspects of street trees in London, the benefits of street tree planting, the example of Ada Salter and the pioneering work done in neighbouring Bermondsey, some individual species of interest and building resilience into the urban forest for the future.

The walk will be a circular tour from the venue followed by a brief presentation and questions about the issues raised. On the walk we will identify various tree species we encounter, the stories of each species through which we will touch on the history of street tree planting in London, where the trees come from and how they get to be here.

About Paul Wood

Paul Wood is the author of ‘London’s Street Trees: A Field Guide to the Urban Forest’, published in 2017. He has had a lifelong passion for trees and the natural world since growing up with a wood just beyond his back garden as a child. After arriving in London, the remarkable diversity of trees found on the city’s streets offered a whole new array of species to learn about and Paul’s investigations led first to a blog (thestreettree.com) and eventually to the book.

Follow Paul’s continuing journey through the urban forest on Twitter and Instagram as @TheStreetTree.

Paul was a Trustee of the London Wildlife Trust for six years until 2017 and returned to study on the MFA programme at Goldsmiths based at Deptford Creek last October.
