Evening Course: Basic Photoshop Skills for Conservators
Wed 29 March 2017, 17:00 – 20:00 BST
The Book and Paper Group Events and Training Committee is delighted to offer another chance to attend our evening workshop on basic Photoshop skills for conservators. The event is generously hosted by the University of Cambridge and subsidised by the Book and Paper Group.
About the Course:
The course is suitable both for conservators with some existing Photoshop skills and for complete beginners. The aim of the evening is to provide a working knowledge of file formats (and their uses), image resolution, and colour profiles. A particular focus will be the use of Photoshop for basic colour balancing.
Key principles of photography that make Photoshop editing easier
Where things are in Photoshop and what you need
Which files to use and how to open them
What is the ‘right’ size image for your screen and for printing?
The balance between good image quality and manageable file sizes
How to correctly use a colour chart for ‘colour balancing’ an image
How to save different types of files
Additional topics may be covered if time allows.
Basic pre-existing computer skills are helpful, but the course is aimed at beginner Photoshop users. Attendees may bring their own images for editing if they wish, but a generic image will be supplied.
About the Tutor:
Alex Owen is a furniture conservator and has recently been elected Chair of the Icon Furniture & Wooden Objects Group. Prior to starting his career in conservation, Alex worked for seven years as a retoucher and art worker for Empire design, a prestigious creative agency specialising in producing marketing material and posters for the film industry. Working with the Adobe Creative Suite of software (principally Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) this role involved close creative relationships with designers, photographers, actors and clients.
Alex joined the Conservation course at the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2011. Since graduating he has worked for a range of private and public companies and institutions including the V&A, Taylor Pearce, Carvers and Gilders, Virtue Conservation Housekeeping, and DBR Ltd. These two careers put Alex in an ideal position to lead a course familiarising conservators with Photoshop.
