Experience a drawing class like no other.
These evening drawing sessions, broadcast live from the Royal Drawing School studios, are an opportunity for students to experience the dynamic and dramatic possibilities of the life room from home. Join students online from across the globe to draw from the model, theatrical sets, dancers, and more, with something new each week. Using a range of drawing practices, our expert tutors will guide you through a series of exercises over the course of each session.
In this online life drawing session led by tutor David Gardner, we will explore the creative possibilities of artificial lighting and how it can transform our approach to the human form. From Caravaggio’s dramatic chiaroscuro to Lucas Samaras’ staged photographs and Euan Uglow’s night-time paintings, we’ll consider how artists have used lighting in bold and inventive ways to illuminate and reimagine the figure.
Working with coloured spotlights and an elaborate set, we’ll experiment with contrasting tones and observe how they affect the body, shifting mood, depth and perspective. All levels welcome.
Suggested Materials:
- Soft pastels / Oil pastels in a range of colours. Warm and cold tones.
- Paper in various sizes - we suggest A3 - A1.
