About this event

Join artist Keith Piper in conversation with Yuen Fong Ling to hear about his work, inspiration, and approach to the current display at the Graves Gallery, Outside Narration.

The display is a powerful exploration of alternative and outsider perspectives on our recognised histories curated by Piper, one of the co-founders of the seminal Blk Art Group.

Alongside Piper’s own large-scale work, The Seven Rages of Man (1984-2018) – which imagines seven ages, or rages, through which the black dispersed population has passed, as well as the future to come – Piper presents objects from the city’s collection, offering visitors a chance to reflect on the histories they represent.

Keith Piper is a British based artist and academic. His creative practice responds to specific social and political issues, historical relationships and geographical sites. Adopting a research driven approach, and using a variety of media, his work has ranged from painting, through photography and installation to a use of digital media, video and computer-based interactivity. He currently works in the Fine Art Department at Middlesex University, London.

Yuen Fong Ling is an artist and curator based at Bloc Studios, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and Early Career Researcher Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University. He has a socially engaged and performance-based art practice that explores his biographical connections with permitted histories, people, places and objects. This research has contributed to Commissioner evidence for Sheffield’s Race Equality Commission and Sheffield City Council’s “Decolonising Street Names, Statues and Monuments” working group.

Please note that the Outside Narration exhibition will be open to view at the Graves Gallery before the talk starts at 6pm. The talk will then take place over at the Millennium Gallery, in the large events space.
