This practical, hands-on session is designed for Wilder Nottinghamshire Network community groups only (or those planning to start one). Each organisation can send one representative (up to 15 spaces available).
Join us for an immersive evening exploring one of the UK’s most fascinating nocturnal animals. This hands-on workshop will give you the skills, confidence, and inspiration to contribute to vital citizen science records that help protect bats for the future.
Held at the beautiful Colwick Country Park, this Wilder Nottinghamshire Network member workshop will introduce you to bats, the habitats they rely on, and—most importantly—how you can run your own surveys to collect and share valuable records.
What we’ll cover
Introduction to bats in England – why they matter and the threats they face.
Why bats need our protection – bats are vital for healthy ecosystems, controlling insects, pollinating plants, and acting as biodiversity indicators. Sadly, many UK species are under pressure from habitat loss, climate change, and declining insect numbers.
How to run a bat survey for citizen science – contribute valuable records to support national conservation efforts.
Practical training on using bat detectors, with the chance to borrow equipment from the Wilder Nottinghamshire Network resource library.
Resources and information from local bat conservation groups, with leaflets to take away.
Guided bat walk around the park, with plenty of time to practice your new skills.
You’ll also have the chance to connect with other local groups taking action for wildlife across Nottinghamshire.
Practical details
Meeting point: Rectory Playing Field Car Park, Mile End Rd, Colwick NG4 2DW from 6.45pm. We’ll walk down to the wardens’ hut together for a prompt 7pm start.
What to bring:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Warm layers for the evening
- A torch
- Drinking water
- A camping chair if needed (no seats on site)
Please note: there are no toilet facilities at Colwick Country Park.
This workshop is weather permitting and may be cancelled or rescheduled at short notice.
