Join us and RUSI for a discussion on the geopolitics of the Syrian crisis and the role of international, regional and local players.

The evening will feature a short introduction to the Syrian conflict followed by a panel of experts from RUSI and Chatham House.

Michael Stephens (RUSI) - Panelist

Michael Stephens is a Research Fellow for Middle East Studies and Head of RUSI Qatar. His recent research has focused on the Kurdish regions of Syria and Iraq and their response to the threat of the Islamic State.

Michael Studied at King’s College London and undertook three years of postgraduate research in the Middle East. He is proficient in both Arabic and Hebrew.




Dr. Rim Turkmani - Senior Research Fellow at LSE

Dr Rim Turkmani is a Senior Research Fellow at LSE working on the War economy in Syria and the role of Syrian civil society in brokering peace and creating stability from the bottom up. She is active in Syrian civil society circles, working on promoting peace and democratic transition in Syria.

She is an Astrophysicist by training, previous Dorothy Hodgkin fellow of the Royal Society and writer/curator on the history of Islamic science and culture, focusing on the impact of the Arabic/Islamic science on the scientific revolution in the 17th century.




Chris Phillips (Queen Mary University and Chatham House) - Panelist

Dr Chris Phillips joined the School in January 2012, having previously worked as deputy editor for Syria and Jordan at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Before then he did his PhD and Masters in International Relations at the London School of Economics, and BA at Cambridge. He is currently an associate fellow at the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House, working primarily on the Syrian conflict and its impact on neighbouring states and the wider Middle East.



Layla Yarjani - Moderator

Layla is the founder of NEXTGen London, the first chapter and network of young professionals supporting UNICEF in Europe. Layla is also a consultant and works across industries. She has a range of experience advising corporates, start-ups and charities. She has advised development projects around the world and is actively involved in the education tech space. Layla has a BA (International Relations) and BBA (Business Strategy & Mgmt) from the University of Texas at Austin.
