Event Information
Description
The 9th Annual Scottish Union Learning Everyday Skills Event 'Building a Resilient Workforce' will take place on Thursday, 23 February 2017, from 09.00 to 15.00 at the Albany Learning and Conference Centre, 44 Ashley Street, Glasgow G3 6DS.
The Event enables trade unions to raise awareness of Everyday Skills issues in the workplace, and to share best practice in supporting those with Everyday Skills needs. It is aimed at Union Learning Representatives, Learning Organisers and Tutors.
The 2017 Everyday Skills Event will focus on safer communities and cyber security. There will also be opportunities to explore mental health issues in the workplace and how to implement delivery of a recognised adult learning qualification.
Guest Speakers will be Yvonne MacDermid from Money Advice Scotland, followed by Mandy Haeburn-Little, (Chief Executive) and Gerry Grant (Chief Ethical Hacker) from the Scottish Business Resilience Unit at the University of Stirling.
Participants will be able to attend two of the following three breakout sessions, depending on availability:
The Power of Okay - a session on learning about mental health issues and how to improve mental health conditions in the workplace, led by See Me
This is an interactive session using See Me’s workplace campaign and e-learning programme to understand what mental health stigma and discrimination looks and feels like, and how to move from a mentally unhealthy workplace environment to a mentally healthy workplace environment. The workshop will cover topics such as performance appraisal, returning to work, staff room banter and employee rights. See Me is Scotland’s Programme to end mental health stigma and discrimination, enabling people who experience mental health problems to live fulfilled lives.
Adult Achievement Award - a session on implementing a flexible, nationally recognised qualification, led by Newbattle Abbey College and Workers’ Educational Association
Adult Achievement Award (AAA) is a first for Scotland, a flexible and inclusive programme providing adults with the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification. The aim of this session is to provide you with insight into the AAA by explaining how the qualification works and highlighting a variety of ways it can be delivered, in particular with vulnerable learners with no, or very low level qualifications. With specific reference to the recent pilot carried out at Royal Mail in Springburn, the session facilitators will introduce AAA resources and encourage participants to explore possibilities for delivery of the qualification in their own workplace contexts.
Personal Cyber Security - a session on developing skills to protect our data and the devices we rely on from security exploits and attacks, led by Craig Steele
Nowadays our computers, phones, and tablets are filled with personal information - but how can we keep that sensitive information out of the wrong hands? In this session you will learn about the most common cyber security attacks, but more importantly how to take steps to protect yourself. You will see live demonstrations of attacks and learn how to spot them. These tips will help you feel more confident about using a computer safely. No technical knowledge is required.
Please note: Places for each session are limited and if one of your two choices is oversubscribed you will be automatically given a place on one of the remaining sessions.
To attend the Event please register by: 17 February 2017.
