About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Knitting socks is an absolute joy. A small, portable project that allows you to be adventurous with colourwork, construction, and design. But with a wealth of patterns and information out there, and so many different ways to construct your project, it can feel a little daunting…

During this class with Amanda Jones, you’ll be knitting the sweetest mini-sock to take home with you, incorporating all the different stages of sock-making.

Amanda will be there to hold your hand through every step of top-down construction…

· Chat about the different yarn weights used for socks.

· Look at specific stitches involved in sock-making.

· Learn stretchy cast on’s for a perfect cuff.

· Discover some of the best ways to turn a heel. (Very satisfying and not as difficult as it looks!)

· Cast off and master the art of grafting.

Once you have knit your first sock you will be knitting them for all your friends and family, they really are that addictive! We can’t wait to soak up all of Amanda’s knowledge and level-up our sock knitting skills.

Skill Level Information: This class is for sock knitting beginners, or anyone looking to hone and level up their sock skills. However, this class is not for absolute beginner knitters. You will need to have a working knowledge of knitting using the magic loop method or knitting with DPNs.

What is included? A skein of Exmoor Sock 4ply yarn will be included in the colour of your choice. Measurement charts and fact sheets are included. You will also receive a complimentary voucher for a beverage from the pop-up MOW café.

What do students need to bring? Students will need to bring either a 100cm /40”circular needle or 60cm /24” circular needles, and needle tips for knitting socks. (Whatever you feel comfortable using.) Or a set of DPNs appropriate for knitting socks. (2.25mm – 2.5mm recommended)

We are an independent, woman owned business making Yarns and Fibre Tops in our small scale, worsted spinning Mill in North Devon (one of only a handful still operating in the UK). Where possible we source fibre locally, or through trusted suppliers in the Falklands and worldwide. We use predominantly vintage machinery that we have lovingly restored and maintained to create wonderful artisan goods using a hands-on approach to production. All our Yarn and Tops ranges are blended and designed by our team of trusty mill folk, inspired by the natural world around us or our interests in art, music and nostalgia.
