Evoking a Spirit of Place - exclusive Arne Maynard study day
Tue, 20 Jun 2017, 09:45
Following on from the success of our exclusive study day last year, Arne Maynard has kindly agreed to a return visit, in the magical setting of Allt-y-bela, Arne's medieval home and garden in Monmouthshire. Anyone with an interest in design will find this an extremely valuable opportunity. Central to Arne's skill is his ability to draw out the qualities of any site he designs for, by reading its landscape, location and architectural style. Our study day will go to the heart of that process and you will leave with numerous inspiring ideas to distill down for your own design projects.
After coffee in the kitchen, Arne will explain the history of Allt-y-bela and tell us about the design choices he has made here before taking us out to explore and look in detail at the structure and planting. You will be welcome to look around the house too, with a drink and canapés, before a delicious sit-down lunch in the studio, hosted by Arne. Understanding the links between outside and in by reading the garden from the windows is an important part of the design process.
In the afternoon, Arne will give us an insight into his own gardening passion, history and aesthetic with an illustrated talk, focusing on other projects as well as Allt-y-bela. He will explore how careful observation can uncover the true essence of a place and thereby add strength and meaning to a subsequent design.
Our day will finish with tea and cakes and, with only 16 places, there will be time to ask questions throughout the day. Details of local accommodation can be found on www.arnemaynard.com.
Guests will make their own way to Allt-y-bela. Parking is limited so car sharing is encouraged.
