Event description
Join us for an evening of inspiring talks and drinks with the founders of Lucy & Yak, Glow Organic and Pier2Pier Beach Clean.

About this Event

As awareness increases about our current climate situation, people are becoming more willing than ever before to make changes to their lifestyle but, more it can be difficult to know what exactly to do to make a positive difference. While there are, of course, large steps we can take like investing in building a solar powered home or a hybrid car, there are other more accessible ways you can reduce your carbon footprint, too, such as changing which products you purchase. Sustainability doesn’t mean living without luxuries but rather being aware of your resource consumption and reducing unnecessary waste.

There are a huge number of Brighton business putting sustainability at the forefront of their actions. Many of them aim to make ‘Creating A Sustainable Life’ easier for their customers. To help us lead the way, we have invited 3 local businesses who are smashing it in their field as well as demonstrating that it is possible, not only to scale your business in an eco-friendly way, but also make more sustainable choices in your everyday life. With the founders of Lucy & Yak, Glow Organic and Pier2Pier Beach Clean all speaking, it’s set to be a forward-thinking and uplifting evening.

Join us for an evening of inspiring talks and drinks. Our speakers are:

Lucy & Yak – Chris Renwick and Lucy Greenwood

Lucy & Yak is an ethical and sustainable clothing brand. They become well known and loved for their dungarees and founders, Chris and Lucy, have gone from selling them on Depop out of their van (Yak) to having 13 employees and counting, a factory in India, a warehouse in Yorkshire and a shop in just over a year. Everything Lucy & Yak sell is handmade, and they run on 100% on renewable.

As well as creating fabulous, high quality clothes and products that people adore, they are committed to being fair with everyone that has an input in the making of Lucy & Yak clothing

They strive to give every customer the most awesome buying experience every time and to always be working towards a positive environmental impact. They’ll be sharing their story and talking to us about how they came up with their company values as well as how they’re achieving them.

Glow Organic – Mel Jenkinson

Glow Organic founder, Mel, created her company to be able to provide people with organic and natural beauty products formulated from nourishing natural ingredients. Having worked as a makeup artist in the film, fashion and bridal industries, she discovered the effects that long-term use of makeup containing synthetic ingredients was having on people’s skin, many of which were contributing to skin conditions such as premature ageing, acne, rosacea and eczema.

She knew then that she had to do something and so set out to create products that nourish and heal skin instead. Not only that but Mel has made sure that Glow Organic use ethical practices every step of the way in getting their products to market. This includes sourcing their ingredients sustainably, never testing their ingredients or the final product on animals and using recycled and recyclable materials for the packaging wherever possible.

Mel will be talking about why it’s important to think more carefully about the origin of our beauty products and how to be sure that we’re contributing to a sustainable beauty industry that doesn’t harm the environment, animals or our health.

Pier2Pier Beach Clean – Amy Gibson

Spearheaded by Amy and powered by a team of amazing volunteers, the Pier2Pier has developed from a community beach clean initiative into an adventure company that creates unique opportunities to have fun with purpose.

Amy’s moto is that helping the environment CAN and SHOULD be fun. With Pier2Pier, she created a space and a community where people feel empowered and not hopeless, where people of all ages and backgrounds become environmentalists without a science degree or political background, where we come together to turn global overwhelm into positive local action.

Come along and hear about what started Amy believing in the power of the positive experience, the power of community and the power of music to grow an army of Eco Rebels that will clean up our planet.

12.9.19 - 6.30pm til 8.00pm at The Projects, 8-9 Ship Street

Our last Evolution Evening was about ‘Starting Something Outside Of The Box’. It was an event to celebrate International Women's Day 2019 here at The Projects so we had 3 outstanding female founders. Kathy Caton, founder of Brighton Gin, Harriet Dean-Orange, founder of Harriet's of Hove and Charlotte Kjaer, Head Chef at The Canna Kitchen. They have all challenged conventions and made well known and loved businesses with their 'out of the box' thinking and hard work. It was a wonderful night, hearing from each of them about their highs and lows and also seeing them support one another. You can see some clips from it here.

Often evening speaker led events can leave you feeling confused and uninspired so we're bringing you a series of honest and motivating events. Our talks are all lead by industry experts and have been designed to provide you with the knowledge you need from firsthand experiences so that you can tackle new challenges with confidence. Each speaker will talk you through exactly how they got to where they are through the ups and downs, the bits people don't find it easy to talk about, and most importantly the truth.
